Chapter fifteen - Toupee Farm

“Oh, Jon, how utterly SWEET…”

I closed my eyes as Sam’s voice reverberated around the sunny garden. I should have been pleased. They were the first words he’d spoken since breakfast.

Saturday had proven to be something of an endurance test with him complaining at every opportunity about us visiting Jon and Kit on Sunday. He was like rainwater on limestone rock drip-drip-dripping away trying to mould the landscape to a different shape, one that suited him. He started again on Sunday morning and I caved in. If he really didn’t want to go to their house for lunch, if it would be such an ordeal then I wouldn’t force him. I would go on my own.

He immediately changed his mind saying he couldn’t possibly allow me to suffer alone and he’d tag along after all. By then my teeth were gritted with murderous intent. I told him I didn’t want to hear another word from him. I actually meant on the subject of Sunday lunch, but he had chosen to take me literally, falling into a martyred silence.

Apologies to Kit remained unspoken. He sat through lunch ignoring all attempts to include him in conversation. He picked critically at his food and in general cast a leaden pall over proceedings. Jon seemed oblivious to it, but Kit's face revealed his tension and I felt bad for him.

Once lunch was over and the dishes cleared away, Kit suggested we sojourn to the garden to meet Fred and Ginger, his latest charges from the vet surgery he worked at as a receptionist. Their owner had abandoned them there and Kit was caring for them until they could be re-homed. As soon as Sam clapped eyes on the longhaired, shaggy little guinea pigs, a look of malicious joy spread across his face and his mouth went into autopilot.

“...You’ve got a toupee farm, and they’ve got little legs. Your toupees are running about. Which one are you growing for yourself, darling? I think the ginger and black one will look good on you. Try it on and give us a twirl.” He reached down to pick Ginger out of the pen.

“Leave her alone, don’t you dare touch her.” Kit, pink to the tips of his ears, glowered furiously at Sam.

“Ooh, tsk, tsk.” Sam straightened up, his joy deepening in the face of Kit’s annoyance, “aren’t we a possessive little boy. I just wanted to stroke one of Jon’s pet wigs. Is he going to slaughter it himself or will he allow you to humanely bore it to death?”

"Shut your mouth!" Fists clenched, Kit started forward. Jon stopped him, laying a hand on his arm.

“That’s right, Jon,” Sam gave an exaggerated quiver of fear, “restrain the brute. I’m terrified here. He’s mad enough to violently curl my eyelashes or even frizz my hair.”

Jon looked at him with palpable distaste. “You, young man, need teaching a good lesson about manners.”
